Doubles Strategy: Communication and Court Positioning
Doubles players - need your expertise! π€
My partner and I have been playing together for 6 months but we're still struggling with coordination. We're both decent singles players but doubles feels like a completely different game.
## Our Current Issues
### Communication Problems
Not sure when to call shots (yours/mine)
Confusion about who covers lobs
Disagreement on when to poach
Lack of signals for serves
### Positioning Mistakes
Getting caught in no-man's land
Both players going for the same ball
Leaving gaps in court coverage
Poor net positioning
### Strategy Questions
When to play aggressive vs defensive?
How to handle different opponent formations?
Serving strategy (placement, pace)?
Return positioning and tactics?
## Specific Scenarios We Struggle With:
Opponent hits down the middle - who takes it?
High lob over net player - back or switch?
Fast net exchanges - how to coordinate?
Serving to different positions - where should partner be?
Return games - aggressive or safe?
## What We've Tried
Watching YouTube videos
Playing more matches (not helping much)
Trying different formations
## Looking For:
Communication systems that actually work
Positioning fundamentals we might be missing
Practice drills for better coordination
Mental approach to doubles teamwork
Common beginner mistakes to avoid
We really want to improve our partnership. Any doubles veterans willing to share their wisdom?
Thanks! πΎπΎ

For shots down the middle, the rule is: forehand takes it if both players have forehands, otherwise the player with the stronger shot. Communication is key - talk constantly!
