Methodology

There is no single authoritative source for the total number of tennis courts in Europe. National reporting standards vary significantly, and many countries do not maintain centralized registries of all tennis facilities. The figures presented here represent best-effort estimates based on multiple data sources and methodologies.

Data Sources Used

  • National Tennis Federations: Official court counts where available from organizations such as the DTB (Germany), FFT (France), LTA (United Kingdom), and others.
  • Public Sports Infrastructure Datasets: Government-published data on sports facilities from ministries of sport and municipal authorities.
  • OpenStreetMap Tennis Court Mapping: Crowdsourced geographic data identifying tennis court locations across Europe.
  • TennisDex Academy and Club Database: Our internal database of tennis academies, clubs, and facilities compiled through direct research.

Estimation Approach

  • Anchor Countries: Countries with reliable federation data (Germany, France, United Kingdom) serve as benchmarks for validation.
  • Courts-per-Capita Extrapolation: For countries with limited data, estimates are derived using courts-per-capita ratios from comparable neighboring countries with similar tennis participation rates.
  • Margin of Error: All figures are presented as ranges to reflect uncertainty. The typical margin of error is estimated at 10–20% depending on data availability for each country.

Estimated European Total

165,000195,000 courts

Included in This Estimate

  • Club and association tennis courts
  • Tennis academy courts
  • Municipal and public tennis facilities
  • School and university tennis courts
  • Hotel and resort tennis facilities

Excluded from This Estimate

  • Private residential tennis courts
  • Temporary or pop-up tennis installations

Limitations and Transparency

  • Under-mapped regions: Eastern European countries and rural areas across all countries tend to have less comprehensive mapping and registration of tennis facilities.
  • Differences in national reporting: Some federations count only registered club courts, while others include public facilities. Reporting criteria are not standardized across Europe.
  • Seasonal courts: Indoor courts are generally well-documented, but seasonal outdoor courts (particularly bubble courts and temporary installations) may not be consistently recorded.
  • Private facilities: Courts at private homes, estates, and gated communities are typically not included in any official statistics.
  • Data currency: Federation data may lag by 1–3 years from publication date. We note the most recent available source year where possible.
