Dealing with Match Anxiety - Mental Game Help
Hi everyone,
I've been playing tennis for 3 years and while I'm decent in practice, I completely fall apart in matches due to anxiety. Looking for mental game strategies.
## The Anxiety Symptoms
Hands shake before serving
Overthinking every shot
Tight shoulders and rushed breathing
Second-guessing my shot selection
Getting frustrated after mistakes
## What Triggers It
Playing against better opponents
Close scores (especially at deuce)
When people are watching
Important points (break points, set points)
After making a few errors in a row
## What I've Tried
Deep breathing (helps a little)
Positive self-talk
Visualization before matches
Focusing on process vs outcome
## Looking For:
### Pre-Match Routines
What do you do to calm nerves before playing?
Any specific warm-up rituals?
Mental preparation strategies?
### During-Match Techniques
How to reset after bad points?
Staying present and focused?
Managing pressure situations?
### Between-Point Routines
Consistent routines to stay calm?
How long should I take between points?
Physical movements that help?
### Long-term Mental Training
Books, apps, or resources you recommend?
Working with sports psychologists?
Practice drills for mental toughness?
I know the physical skills are there, but the mental side is holding me back. Any advice would be incredibly helpful!
Thanks for reading! 🧠🎾

I struggled with this too! What helped me was developing a consistent pre-serve routine. Same bounce pattern, same breathing, every time. It becomes automatic and calming.
