Adult Beginner: Starting Tennis at 35 - Is It Too Late?
Hello tennis community! 👋
I'm 35 years old and have decided to take up tennis. I've always loved watching the sport but never played seriously. Now I have some free time and want to give it a shot, but I'm wondering if I'm starting too late.
## My Background
Never played tennis competitively
Decent athletic background (played soccer in college)
Good general fitness level
Quick learner but realistic about limitations
## My Concerns
### Physical Limitations
Will my body handle the demands?
Recovery time longer than younger players?
Risk of injury higher?
Flexibility and mobility issues?
### Learning Curve
How long to develop basic consistency?
Can you teach an old dog new tricks?
Muscle memory development at my age?
Competing with people who've played for decades?
### Social Aspects
Will I fit in at tennis clubs?
Finding appropriate playing partners?
Dealing with much better players?
Adult beginner programs available?
## What I've Done So Far
Watched YouTube instructional videos
Hit against a wall a few times
Bought basic equipment
Found a local coach for lessons
## My Goals (Realistic?)
### Short-term (6 months)
Consistent groundstrokes
Basic serve technique
Rally for 10+ shots
Understand scoring and rules
### Medium-term (1-2 years)
Play recreational matches
Join a tennis club
Develop all-court game
Maybe try a beginner tournament?
### Long-term (3+ years)
Solid 3.5 NTRP level
Regular playing partners
Enjoy competitive matches
Stay injury-free
## Questions for Adult Beginners:
What age did you start?
Biggest challenges you faced?
How long to feel comfortable?
Best learning resources?
Injury prevention tips?
Finding playing partners?
## Questions for Coaches:
Different approach for adult beginners?
Realistic timeline for development?
Common mistakes to avoid?
Group vs private lessons?
Physical conditioning importance?
## Specific Technical Questions:
### Lessons and Learning
How often should I take lessons?
Group classes vs private instruction?
What to practice between lessons?
Online resources that actually help?
### Physical Preparation
Tennis-specific fitness routine?
Flexibility and mobility work?
Strength training recommendations?
Recovery and injury prevention?
### Equipment
Beginner-friendly racket specs?
String tension for learning?
Court shoes importance?
Other essential gear?
### Playing Opportunities
Where to find beginner-friendly games?
Tennis clubs vs public courts?
Adult beginner leagues?
Social tennis groups?
## My Motivation
Love the strategy and mental aspect
Great workout and social activity
Challenge myself with something new
Sport I can play for many years
I know I'll never be a great player starting this late, but I'm hoping to reach a level where I can enjoy competitive recreational tennis.
Is 35 too late to start tennis seriously?
I'd love to hear success stories from other adult beginners, or honest assessments of what I should expect.
Thanks for the encouragement (or reality check)! 😅🎾

Started at 32 and now play 4.0 level tennis! It's never too late. Focus on lessons, be patient with yourself, and find other adult beginners to play with. You'll be surprised how quickly you improve!

Age is just a number! I have a hitting partner who started at 40 and now beats players half his age. Consistency and smart play beat power every time. Keep at it!
